Written by Aetion | Oct 30, 2025

Essential tremor (ET) is among the most common movement disorders, yet estimates of its prevalence have varied widely across studies. This analysis, published in Tremor and Other Hyperkinetic Movements, provides an updated estimate of diagnosed ET in the U.S. using large-scale administrative claims data and explores methodological factors that influence prevalence assessment.

Study Overview

Drawing from 2022 data in the Merativeā„¢ MarketScanĀ® Research Databases, researchers estimated ET prevalence among continuously enrolled U.S. adults. After age standardization, approximately 1.1 million adults were estimated to have diagnosed ET, with nearly three-quarters receiving possible treatment. Findings underscore how case definition and standardization choices critically shape real-world estimates of chronic disease burden.
